Sunday, 02/07  5th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Scripture: Isaiah 6:1-8(9-13); Luke 5:1-11
Sermon theme: Today’s scriptures remind us that being confronted with God’s holiness and majesty can be terrifying. Isaiah has a vision of the Lord surrounded by seraphim and cries out that he is lost. Peter, likewise, perceives Jesus’ holiness and can hardly bear to be in the presence of God’s anointed. Paul grieves and shakes at the thought of his own prior persecution of the church. And the psalmist knows full well the glory of God and the wrath that God can visit on the unrighteous. God calls us to service, but that call can seem terrifying. Is it any wonder that God is always saying, “Be not afraid”?
